Zoe’s Place is a hospice dedicated to babies and children aged 0-5 years with life-limiting and complex conditions. With the lease ending on its current premises, PSA joined the design team to provide detailed mechanical and electrical designs for the new facility. Our technical expertise was focused on creating environments that support specialist treatment areas, comfortable family accommodation spaces, office space and sensory areas. The comprehensive building services design accounts for precise temperature control, therapeutic facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, and robust safety systems.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Zoe’s Place faced a significant transition as the lease on their existing building approached its end. As a hospice providing dedicated care for babies and children up to five years old with life-limiting and complex conditions, it required a purpose-built facility that would meet its highly specialised needs. The client required a care environment featuring treatment rooms designed for complex medical requirements, sensory spaces for families during difficult times, and comfortable accommodation areas where families could stay whilst their children received care. The building needed to incorporate specialised healthcare infrastructure that would maintain precise environmental conditions, support complex medical equipment, and create a welcoming atmosphere that felt more like a home than a clinical setting.
OUR SOLUTION
PSA collaborated closely with the broader design team to deliver detailed technical designs for the mechanical and electrical services throughout the new Zoe’s Place building. Working with healthcare specialists, we created integrated systems that balanced clinical functionality with homely comfort. Our engineering team developed solutions tailored to the unique demands of paediatric palliative care.
The design elements include:
- Zoned heating and cooling systems with precise temperature control for clinical areas
- Ventilation systems engineered for optimal air quality and infection control
- Energy-efficient lighting designed for both clinical requirements and comforting environments
- Comprehensive power distribution supporting medical equipment needs
- Advanced safety and security systems
- Specialised mechanical services for the hydrotherapy pool facility
- Comfort controlled environments
THE OUTCOME
The completed Zoe’s Place facility will provide a much-needed haven where children with life-limiting conditions can receive specialist care in an environment designed specifically for their needs. Families will benefit from thoughtfully designed spaces that offer privacy, comfort and support during challenging times. The building services will operate seamlessly in the background, creating optimal conditions for care while maintaining the welcoming, non-institutional atmosphere that is so vital to the Zoe’s Place philosophy of holistic family support.
