Social Value Impact 2024: Making a Difference in Construction

The construction industry is at a critical point where social value is no longer just a buzzword—it’s a fundamental business imperative. At PSA, we’ve always believed that our responsibility extends far beyond delivering exceptional mechanical and electrical engineering services. We’re committed to creating meaningful impact that resonates through our industry and community.

The Bigger Social Value Picture

Social value has become a key consideration in tender evaluations, with an increasing number of projects prioritising organisations that demonstrate genuine commitment to wider societal benefits. This isn’t just about ticking boxes—it’s about recognising the construction industry’s profound potential to drive positive change.

Our Commitment to Learning & Development

At PSA, we’ve identified skills development as a crucial area where we can make a tangible difference. The widening skills gap in construction is a challenge we’re tackling head-on through targeted initiatives:

PSA Academy: This year we further enhanced our training to develop well-rounded engineers blending the academic and practical skills together. All new starters irrespective of experience goes through some level of the Academy to ensure we’re all singing from the same PSA hymn sheet, providing the very best quality and service for our clients.

T-Level Student Programme: We’ve welcomed our first T-Level student this year, with plans to expand to two more placements next year. This isn’t just about providing opportunities—it’s about introducing young people to the world of building services.

School Work Experience: We’ve hosted two school work experience students, offering them real-world insights into careers in construction and mechanical engineering.

Degree Apprenticeships: We’re currently funding five trainee engineers through their Degree Apprenticeship programmes, investing directly in the next generation of industry professionals.

Growing Our Impact

Our 32% people growth this year isn’t just a milestone—it’s an opportunity to amplify our social impact. With 10 additional team members, we’ve expanded our capacity for community engagement, charity fundraising, and positive contribution, not to mention the employment opportunities for local people.

Charity & Community Engagement

We’ve significantly ramped up our fundraising efforts this year, transforming our commitment into tangible support:

  • Total Fundraising: Over £6,000 raised for local and national charities
  • Zoe’s Place Partnership: Pledged £1,000 towards its £3m building fund, ultimately raising £1,267

Charity Events:
  • Joined Shelter’s Walk the Big One
  • Completed the Cross Bay Walk for Baby Beat
  • Hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning
  • Held sponsored Go-Karting and Crown Green Bowls events

Looking Forward to our Social Value Aims

We firmly believe that in today’s world, businesses cannot afford to be passive. If you’re not actively part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

Our social value goals are ongoing. We’re continuously seeking innovative ways to contribute to our industry, support our community, and create meaningful opportunities for the next generation of construction professionals.
