PSA supported the transformation of an existing university space into a sophisticated research facility at Manchester Metropolitan University. Our team provided specialist mechanical engineering design services for the university’s new water flume research facility. The new water flume enables the modelling of water flow and river environments. By carefully addressing complex engineering requirements, we helped create a purpose-built environment. The new facility is capable of supporting advanced research activities and practical learning opportunities for students.
CLIENT: Manchester Metropolitan University

CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Manchester Metropolitan University required specialist mechanical engineering design to convert an existing space into a dedicated water flume research facility. The water flume, a specialised tank used to model river environments and water behaviour, was intended to support both academic research and student learning.
In addition, the university needed a solution that could accommodate the specialist requirements of the flume apparatus while making efficient use of the existing building infrastructure. The project therefore required the seamless integration of water management systems, drainage, power supplies, ventilation and lighting. Overall, it creates a safe, functional and future-ready research environment.
OUR SOLUTION
To achieve these objectives, PSA developed a comprehensive mechanical design strategy focused on integrating the specialist equipment within the existing building.
Specifically, our solution included:
- Repositioning ventilation systems to support the revised room layout and equipment requirements.
- Designing specialist power infrastructure for the water flume apparatus.
- Developing water supply and drainage systems, including a silt trap to manage sediment and protect downstream systems.
- Providing lighting solutions to support teaching, research and observation activities.
- Incorporating data infrastructure to support research, monitoring and analysis.
Throughout the project, our team worked closely with the university and wider design team. Additionally, our role was to ensure all building services supported the facility’s operational and research requirements.
THE OUTCOME
The completed water flume facility has provided Manchester Metropolitan University with a valuable research and teaching resource. Researchers can now undertake detailed studies into river processes, hydraulic behaviour and environmental systems within a controlled setting.
Furthermore, students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities that bring theoretical concepts to life. As a result, the facility supports both educational excellence and innovative research. As a result, this helps the university strengthen its capabilities in environmental and engineering disciplines.
