Working alongside Thomas Armstrong PSA delivered comprehensive building services for the transformation of Maryport Activity Centre. Our mechanical and electrical design solutions support new fitness facilities, a children’s adventure playground, and flexible community spaces. The project presented unique challenges in upgrading systems within an existing building whilst maintaining its historic harbour-side character. Through careful planning and close collaboration with the project team, we delivered energy-efficient systems that meet the diverse needs of this modern community hub.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Cumberland Council sought to breathe new life into The Wave centre as part of its regeneration programme for Maryport. The council needed building services that would support the venue’s evolution from a cinema and conference space into a versatile family activity centre. Key requirements included heating and ventilation systems for the new gym and fitness studios, robust electrical infrastructure for the adventure play equipment, and mechanical services for the café and changing facilities. Energy efficiency and low running costs were essential considerations for long-term sustainability.
OUR SOLUTION
Our building services design focused on creating comfortable, well-ventilated spaces that could adapt to different uses throughout the day. We designed:
- Variable air volume (VAV) ventilation system to serve the gym and fitness studios
- Enhanced lighting design incorporating daylight sensors and LED technology
- New electrical infrastructure to support adventure play equipment
- Hot water and ventilation systems for changing facilities and showers
- Commercial kitchen ventilation and services for the café
- Building management system for efficient environmental control
- Upgraded power distribution to support new audio-visual equipment
- Energy-efficient heating system with zonal controls
THE OUTCOME
The centre opened in January 2024 with modern, reliable building services that enhance the user experience whilst minimising energy consumption. Our systems provide the flexibility needed for diverse activities, from high-intensity fitness classes to children’s play sessions. The new mechanical and electrical infrastructure gives Cumberland Council a sustainable community venue that will serve Maryport for years to come.
