A dated Greater Manchester Mental Health facility has been given new life as a modern medical facility, combining comfortable office space with purpose-built treatment areas. Our team delivered comprehensive mechanical and electrical design services to RIBA Stages 2 to 6 to create a safe and comfortable environment that serves both staff and patients effectively. The revitalised building now features distinct zones: one half accommodates office space with staff facilities, whilst the other provides well-equipped treatment and assessment rooms.
CLIENT: Greater Manchester Mental Health
LOCATION: Manchester
SERVICES: Mechanical & Electrical Design
CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Our client needed to breathe new life into an ageing building, transforming it into a dual-purpose medical facility. The brief called for a careful balance between creating a practical workspace for staff and establishing a welcoming environment for patients. The office area required a modern kitchen and comfortable staff spaces, whilst the treatment section demanded specialised rooms for patient assessments and procedures. The challenge lay in ensuring both areas would function independently whilst maintaining cohesion throughout the building.
OUR SOLUTION
We took charge of the complete mechanical and electrical design package, carefully considering the distinct needs of each area. Our work encompassed the design of:
- Efficient lighting schemes and power distribution
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
- Access control & security
- Full strip out and rewire including distribution board replacement
- Lighting & lighting controls
- Modifications to data & fire alarm
- Modification to existing mechanical systems
To determine the Clinical Risk grade and associated requirements, our engineers conducted a medical facility risk assessment in collaboration with the Electrical Safety group. This assessment allowed us to identify the appropriate requirements. We paid particular attention to the treatment areas, ensuring they met all necessary healthcare requirements. The project involved detailed Stage 4 design work, followed by thorough onsite inspections through Stages 5 and 6 to guarantee everything was implemented to specification.
THE OUTCOME
The transformed building now serves its new purpose perfectly, with staff and patients benefiting from the modernised spaces. Both the office and treatment areas are fully operational, providing a comfortable and efficient environment for all users.
