UCLan St Peter’s Art Centre

About this project

The University of Central Lancashire approached PSA about upgrading the heating system for its grade II* listed St Peter’s Church. This historic building, with its architectural heritage dating back to 1825, had a complex challenge to bring its heating system into the 21st century. Our team tackled the task of modernising the building’s mechanics while preserving its timeless charm.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

The University of Central Lancashire, our long-standing client, needed a thorough assessment of St Peter’s Arts Centre’s mechanical and electrical systems. They sought our expertise to conduct a comprehensive condition survey, identify necessary repairs or replacements, and provide accurate budget estimates. The ultimate goal was to ensure this landmark could continue serving the university community efficiently and comfortably, without compromising its historical integrity.

OUR SOLUTION

After completing our detailed survey, we pinpointed the ageing boiler in the basement as the primary concern. Replacing it, however, wasn’t as straightforward as it might seem in a modern building. The real test was how to install a new flue that met current regulations without marring the church’s exterior. Our breakthrough moment came when we proposed routing the flue through one of the existing turrets, effectively hiding it from view. This clever solution not only satisfied regulatory requirements but also won the approval of the conservation officer, demonstrating our knack for problem-solving and sensitivity to listed buildings.

THE OUTCOME

Our innovative approach to the flue installation ensured that St Peter’s Arts Centre received its much-needed heating upgrade without any visible alterations to its historic facade. The university was thrilled with our solution, which balanced modern efficiency with heritage preservation. This project stands as a shining example of our ability to breathe new life into cherished old buildings, keeping them warm, functional, and true to their roots.
