Myerscough College – Skills Centre

About this project

PSA completed a Mechanical and Electrical design for a £2.5 million Foundation Learning & Skills Training Centre. This dual-purpose facility serves as a specialist learning hub for students with learning difficulties and a skills centre for young people, apprentices, and those seeking employment opportunities. Our team tackled the challenge of integrating sustainable energy solutions, including a biomass boiler and PV installation, to achieve an impressive A+ EPC rating.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

Our client proposed a learning centre that would cater to diverse educational needs while championing sustainability. They sought a facility that could provide specialised support for students with learning difficulties, as well as offer valuable skills training for young people and job seekers. The brief included the integration of eco-friendly energy solutions to minimise the building’s carbon footprint. Additionally, the project required careful planning to incorporate a new transport hub and glasshouse facilities, whilst managing the demolition of outdated structures. The goal was to create a multifunctional space that would benefit the community for years to come.

OUR SOLUTION

Our team at PSA meticulously planned and designed the mechanical and electrical systems for the Foundation Learning & Skills Training Centre, ensuring it met all the specified requirements.

We designed the provision for:

  • Biomass boiler
  • Solar PV panels, to achieve the building’s energy efficiency requirements
  • Heating, ventilation and cooling
  • Lighting and power

We coordinated the development of the new bus turning and transport hub, seamlessly integrating it with the main building. We coordinated the demolition making way for the new large glasshouse facilities. Throughout the project, we maintained open communication with all stakeholders, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish.

THE OUTCOME

The result is a fantastic A+ EPC rated, carbon-neutral learning centre. Our client was pleased with the outcome – a versatile, sustainable facility. The project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful design and engineering can create spaces that nurture learning and skills development.
