Fire Station Refurbishment – Kendal Fire Station

About this project

PSA supported the fire station refurbishment of Kendal Fire Station with electrical design, while the hub remained operational around the clock. The station included appliance bays, sleeping accommodation and a vehicle workshop. Therefore, the electrical design and construction sequence had to protect emergency response capability. Our team reviewed the existing electrical distribution and agreed phasing with project managers and station staff. We then planned temporary electrical supplies around critical areas and essential operational equipment. This approach allowed contractors to install, test and commission new services before removing redundant systems.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

The client needed a fire station refurbishment. As part of this it required renewing ageing electrical services and improve compliance without disrupting emergency responses. Appliance bays, emergency vehicles and vehicle-mounted equipment had to remain available throughout the electrical refurbishment. In addition, crews required safe routes and continued access to operational spaces. The sequencing also had to reflect the station’s 24-hour use, including overnight sleeping accommodation. Therefore, contractors and station staff needed clear daily communication before every electrical isolation.

OUR SOLUTION FOR FIRE STSTION REFURBISHMENT

We surveyed the electrical mains, incoming supplies and distribution arrangements before developing a phased renewal strategy. Next, we agreed when the contractor could access and release each area. Temporary power supported existing systems while contractors installed the replacement electrical infrastructure. After testing and commissioning, the contractor removed the redundant systems safely. Furthermore, regular coordination aligned planned isolations with Kendal Fire Station’s operational requirements.

  • Phased electrical rewire and distribution renewal
  • Temporary power supporting critical systems during changeovers
  • Continued access to appliance bays and emergency vehicles
  • Power continuity for vehicle-mounted operational equipment
  • Temporary lighting and safe routes through work areas
  • Emergency lighting and fire alarm considerations
  • Replacement of fluorescent lighting with LED fittings
  • Testing and commissioning before removing existing services

THE OUTCOME

A fire station refurbishment was completed. The team renewed Kendal Fire Station’s electrical services while the station remained fully operational. Phasing and temporary supplies protected appliance bay access and supported essential equipment. Consequently, the completed installation improved electrical safety, compliance and reliability. It also provided resilient infrastructure without limiting the station’s ability to respond to emergency call-outs.
