Storm Desmond caused flooding that had damaged the schools existing sports hall, but rather than simply rebuild in the same location, Trinity School decided to create something better and safer for their 1600 pupils. Working alongside JJ Group on this design and build project, PSA delivered comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering solutions for the new £1.8M sports hall. Our team designed and implemented heating, ventilation, power, lighting, fire safety, security, and CCTV systems that would serve the school’s sporting requirements whilst ensuring resilience against future flooding.
LOCATION: Carlisle, Cumbria
VALUE: £1.8m
COMPLETED: May 2018
SERVICES: Mechanical & Electrical Design
CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Trinity School’s primary concern was to relocate its sports hall away from flood-prone areas whilst maintaining the high-quality sporting facilities.
Beyond flood resilience, Trinity School wanted a facility that would serve their 1600 pupils aged 11 to 18 effectively. This meant creating not just a sports hall, but a complete sporting complex with proper changing facilities and office space for PE staff. The school needed systems that would be reliable, energy-efficient, and appropriate for intensive daily use by hundreds of students.
Timing was also crucial. As an active educational establishment, Trinity School couldn’t afford lengthy disruptions to their daily operations.
OUR SOLUTION
PSA worked closely with JJ Group to integrate our mechanical and electrical expertise seamlessly into the design and build process. Our role encompassed the complete M&E package, ensuring every system worked harmoniously within the new building’s architecture and the school’s operational requirements.
Design Elements:
- Heating and ventilation systems optimised for varying occupancy levels
- Energy-efficient power distribution and LED lighting throughout
- Fire safety systems meeting educational standards
- CCTV and security systems
THE OUTCOME
The project was completed in 2018, ahead of schedule and without disrupting Trinity School’s daily operations. The new sports hall now sits safely above potential flood levels, giving the school confidence that their investment is protected against future weather events.
