A £1.2 million renovation project has transformed the inpatient ward at Penrith Hospital. The redesigned 23-bed ward provides enhanced privacy through thoughtfully planned bedroom layouts, complete with en-suite facilities. Working closely with the NHS Trust, we provided mechanical and electrical design solutions that create a brighter, more spacious environment for both patients and staff whilst maintaining the highest standards of clinical care.
CLIENT: Penrith Hospital
VALUE: £1.2m
LOCATION: Penrith, Cumbria
SERVICES: Mechanical & Electrical Design
CLIENT OBJECTIVES
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust needed to modernise their existing inpatient ward to meet contemporary healthcare standards and address the community’s needs identified in their 2016 public consultation. The primary focus was to improve patient dignity and privacy whilst creating a more efficient working environment for medical staff. The Trust wanted to maintain their bed capacity of 23 whilst introducing en-suite facilities and increasing the space around beds to improve care delivery. They also sought to create a brighter, more welcoming environment that would enhance the recovery experience for patients and provide a better working environment for their dedicated healthcare teams.
OUR SOLUTION
Our design team worked in partnership with clinical staff to create a layout that maximises natural light and provides more space around beds for medical equipment and staff access. We carefully planned the mechanical and electrical services to support modern medical requirements whilst ensuring energy efficiency.
Design elements include:
- Advanced ventilation systems providing optimal air quality
- Energy-efficient LED lighting with dimming controls
- Nurse call systems at each bedside
- Data infrastructure supporting modern medical equipment
- Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems
- New power distribution system with medical-grade protection
THE OUTCOME
The renovated ward delivers significant improvements in patient privacy and dignity through its mix of two and four-bed bays, all with en-suite facilities. Staff benefit from a more functional layout that enhances their ability to deliver care. The bright, welcoming environment has received positive feedback from both patients and healthcare teams, whilst the improved facilities ensure the hospital can continue providing quality care closer to home for the Eden Valley community.
