Sandgate SEND School

About this project

PSA provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the £6 million expansion of Sandgate School, a special needs school in Kendal. The project involved building four new classrooms, a sports hall, changing rooms, and additional facilities at the school’s satellite campus within Queen Katherine School. Our team ensured the seamless integration of essential services like HVAC, lighting, power, and plumbing into the new building while prioritising energy efficiency and optimal learning environments for the students.

CLIENT: Westmorland & Furness Council

VALUE: £6m

LOCATION: Kendal, Cumbria

SERVICES: Mechanical & Electrical Design

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

Westmorland and Furness Council contracted PSA to handle the mechanical and electrical engineering aspects of the expansion project. Their primary goal was to create modern, inclusive learning spaces that cater to the needs of pupils with special educational requirements across Key Stages 3 to 5 while creating a sustainable, low-carbon building. The council emphasised the importance of energy-efficient design, ensuring comfortable indoor environments, and incorporating state-of-the-art technology to support diverse learning styles.

OUR SOLUTION

Our team collaborated closely with the architects and construction team to design and install integrated mechanical and electrical systems tailored to the school’s requirements.

We designed systems for:

    • Energy-efficient HVAC solutions with precise climate control for classrooms and common areas
    • Intelligent lighting systems with occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting were incorporated to optimise energy usage
    • Air source heat pumps providing the full heating and hot water
    • Heat recovery ventilation
    • BMS system and controls
    • Roof integrated solar PV – 32kWp
    • LED lighting
    • DALI lighting controls including daylight compensation dimming and central control/monitoring platform

THE OUTCOME

The project is due to complete at Autumn time. Our engineering solutions will contribute to creating inclusive, sustainable, and technologically advanced learning environments that support the school’s mission of providing quality education for students with special needs.
