CLIENT OBJECTIVES
Our client approached us with a concept of converting a former school into a grand country house. They envisioned a home that would retain its historic charm whilst incorporating all the modern comforts. The brief included creating multiple bathrooms, a housekeeper’s flat, laundry facilities, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and even a chapel. Additionally, they wanted a spacious function room and reception areas for entertaining, as well as a private gym. The challenge was to design systems that would cater to these diverse spaces efficiently and discreetly, all while respecting the building’s architectural heritage, including its iconic four-storey square tower over the entrance bay.
OUR SOLUTION
PSA designed the full mechanical and electrical services for this unique project. We developed comprehensive plans for new water supply, heating, hot water, and ventilation systems throughout the building. The thermal modelling proved particularly interesting due to the structure’s irregular shape and numerous nooks and crannies, a legacy of its design by Edinburgh-based architects Peddie & Kinnear. We carefully considered the specific requirements of each area, from the humid environment of the gym to the serene atmosphere of the chapel, always mindful of the building’s varied past as a private residence and later as several schools from 1940 to 2006. Once the designs were complete, we managed the tender process and oversaw the on-site implementation to guarantee the high standards our client expected.
